Inside Out & Back Again is an award-winning, wonderfully written YA novel in verse following the experiences of young Hà starting in wartime Saigon, Vietnam. Hà and her family of three brothers and their mother flee Vietnam in search of safety via a navy ship. The family goes through many new and difficult experiences as immigrants settling in Alabama, and Hà wishes for her life and beloved papaya tree back home. Readers get a taste of the experience of refugees through the thoughts and experiences of Hà. Inside Out & Back Again is great for young adults, early middle school to high school, and is a good introduction to novels in verse for children (and adults) unfamiliar with the genre.
