My Freedom Trip: A Child’s Escape from North Korea depicts the build-up to the Korean War through the eyes of a child, Soo, as she makes the brave, secretive journey to join her father in safety in South Korea.  The book brings the reader through the emotions of departure, heartbreak, and fear with the phrase “Be brave, Soo” a repeated as a kind of mantra throughout the story. Beautiful illustrations by Debra Reid Jenkins meaningfully encapsulate the emotions and happenings of the book. My Freedom Trip can be read with young children to introduce the historical events and consequences of the Korean War in an age-appropriate manner.
