Enriched by beautiful and emotional illustrations, The Gardener follows young Lydia Grace during the time of the Great Depression as she moves to live with her Uncle Jim due to hard times at home. Her fear and sadness of moving pairs with her uncle’s tough demeanor to make for a difficult transition for Lydia Grace. Told through letters between Lydia Grace and her parents and grandparents, the story tells of Lydia Grace’s quiet realization of how to beautify the world around her. This story is a beautiful depiction of every child’s ability to make a difference and improve their world.
