The Wemmicks are wooden people who spend their days putting stickers on each other: gray dots for undesirable, untalented Wemmicks, and yellow stars for attractive, talented Wemmicks. Punchinello is one of those Wemmicks that only acquires gray dots; everything he does to try to improve ends in a blunder that brings him more gray dots. Then one day, he meets a wooden girl who has no dots. Punchinello learns about love and acceptance through his friendship with Lucia, and meeting his maker – the master woodcarver Eli. This story sends the message to all children, “You are special.”
