“Engine, Engine, Number Nine, Rolling, rolling down the line. Wheels are turning, Whistles blowing, Soon we’ll find out Where it’s going.” This rhythm and song tells the story of a train heading somewhere, which the reader doesn’t find out until the very end of the story. Lots of people join the train ride with babies and animals, and the excitement builds up until finally at the end of the story — “Brakes are screeching. Train is slowing. Now we’ll find out Where it’s going.” Engine, Engine, Number Nine is a fun story to read with children, or for beginning readers to read independently with a helpful rhyme.
