Tanya watches her grandmother start working on a patchwork quilt, not sure why her grandmother would need to do such a thing. There are quilts at the store after all, right? As the story goes, Tanya’s grandmother teaches her the value of the quilt making and when Tanya’s grandmother falls ill, Tanya wants to pick up the work her grandmother is unable to do. With its graceful illustrations and beautiful story, The Patchwork Quilt depicts the value of generations together teaching one another, of family, love, and connection. The Patchwork Quilt won the Coretta Scott King Award for its appreciation and depiction of African-American family and culture.
